Cloud security is a hot potato, but to be honest much of the media hype is pretty half-baked. Securing data in the cloud isnât that much of a huge leap from securing data anywhere else, or so you would think. Yet a new survey carried out from amongst the good, the bad and the ugly attending the DEF CON 2010 hacker event in Las Vegas would seem to suggest that those who would access your data without permission see the cloud as something of a sweet shop ripe for the raiding right now.Apparently, 96 percent of the elite IT security professionals taking part in the poll which was organised by Fortify Software said they heartily believed the cloud would provide them with a bounty of hacking opportunities. Some 89 percent claiming that cloud vendors are simply not doing enough to secure the data accessible through their services. OK, so only 12 percent admitted to hacking cloud services for financial gain (a number which can be either doubled or halved depending on whether you think the hackers were bigging themselves up or playing down their deeds) itâs a worrying admission that enterprises looking to migrate into the cloud need to consider.
