Dell Inc has accepted that parts of its servers were infected with a computer virus designed to steal private data and is offering customers replacement parts for free. The firm said that it wasnât aware about any incidents of attack but it had decided to replace the tainted parts at the earliest. A Dell spokesman failed to explain how the virus, named as the W32.Spybot worm, infected the motherboards. Itâs notable that the motherboards were replacement parts and the tainted ones are not being shipped with new machines. The development has however highlighted the escalating threats from the hackers. Many computer users, especially those who are highly experienced, are wary of files that they take off the Internet, while many believe that the computer hardware is vulnerable as well. Dell posted on its website that the virus had impact on less than 1 percent of four of its server models -- PowerEdge R310, R410, R510 and T410. The company vowed that the customers would be safe from attack in case they had launched up-do-date anti-virus software. Itâs learnt that the services are used to manage large amounts of data. A virus attack on server can be more lethal for businesses than personal computers.
