Thai computer gamers set to get serious
Team prepares to compete in Seoul

Competitors at the recent Thai preliminary round of the World Computer Games 2003 focus on their computer screens. The event was organised by Samsung and sponsored by Intel, ARiP and SVOA, to find Thailand's best computer gamers. The winners will represent Thailand in the World Computer Games in Seoul in October.
In which fields does Thailand compete with the best in the world? Tennis and snooker are well known, but here's one that's a bit more surprising _ computer gaming.

No longer are computer games just for geeks and nerds. As a competitive sport it may not yet have qualified for Olympic status but it's already a serious activity. The best gamers can win hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money, as well as the recognition of millions of their peers.

Next month 600 of the world's top gamers from 55 countries will be battling it out at the World Cyber Games in Seoul for US$350,000 in prizes, and Thailand will be well represented.

A team of eight was chosen last month, following their success in the Thai qualifying competition organised by Samsung and sponsored by Intel, SVOA and ARiP. The team members will now undergo a month of intensive training before the WCG.

Each team member has been equipped with an Intel Pentium 4 processor-based PC with Hyper-Threading (HT) technology running at 3.2GHz or 2.6GHz, to help them practise and prepare.

Like gymnasts, cyber gamers also have their own personal best disciplines, but while gymnasts might choose the parallel bars, the beam or the vaulting horse, in the world of cyber games competition categories are based on the most popular commercial games. So a team of five _ the Xunwu team _ will represent Thailand playing Counter-strike, while the other three gamers will compete as individuals in the Unreal Tournament 2003, FIFA Soccer 2003 and Warcraft 3 categories.

The Xunwu team is lead by Sukit Nonta, or Noom, a 24-year-old who writes a computer gaming column for a magazine. The other team members are 15-year-old Siwet Kruawit (Aei) who is a first year student at St Teresa School, 19-year-old Nattawin Maiya (Boy), a sophomore in the Faculty of Humanities, Bangkok University, 17-year-old Danupon Wilailert (Mai) a third year student at Bangkok Commercial College and 18-year-old Lattakorn Thammongkol (Nat), a first year student at the Faculty of Law, Ramkamhaeng University.

Kittipat Roontiwa (Arm), a first year student at the Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Lat Krabang, will compete in the Unreal Tournament 2003 category. Pornthep Chatcharoenchai (Tui) represents Thailand in the FIFA Soccer 2003 game. He is in the second year at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Bangkok. The Warcraft 3 slot goes to a second year student at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Thonburi, Chanin Tingrattanasuwan. Chanin is already well known on the Asian computer games circuit and is ranked among the top two or three percent of the region's hundreds of thousands of players.

All eight gamers reject the idea that they are simply nerds or cyber-junkies. They say that normally they only spend an hour or two a day playing games _ not the 24 hour sessions that parents and teachers fret about _ although that will increase as they prepare for next month's championship.

Noom, leader of the Xunwu team, says that competitive computer gaming requires many of the same qualities as other sports, including practice, teamwork, dedication and the ability to think strategically. He said that games are fun activities but you can also learn about strategy by playing games.

His team mate Nat agrees. ``I see many good things in computer games. There are sports that require strength and sports that rely on brainpower and skills. Computer games fall into the latter category. But we also do other things as well as gaming, like playing football, meeting friends, studying and working, so adults shouldn't worry,'' the 18-year old said.
