Break-ins via the internet to German corporate and government computers have been on the rise since 2005, the country's counterintelligence chief said Saturday in a news interview. Heinz Fromm, 62, heads the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. "The detected number of attacks on German computer systems has significantly risen since 2005," he told the newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt. In 2009, we registered 1,500 attacks on governmental sites alone. "They come mainly from Asia, often from China. There is a whole range of pointers for the suspicion that state agencies are involved." He did not say if the hackers had actually managed to steal data.
